Lions Fall in PAAC matchup at Muncie Burris

Liberty Christian fell to Muncie Burris on the night of August 21, 2017 in 3 sets. The Lions were coming in looking to capitalize on their earlier win against Greenwood Christian. The Owls were looking to keep their momentum after winning their first game of their season. The first set was close early on. Liberty held a tight set and stayed within striking distance only being down a few points. Out of the first timeout of the set, the Owls opened up a 13-8 lead and made it 18-12 later. But with little 2 and 3 point runs, the Lions fell to the Owls in the first set by a score of 25-16.

The Owls' #15 Mykel Ivy emerged in the second set and started the set out with an emphatic kill. Ivy had 6 kills in the set. But again, the Lions held it close early in the set. The Owls' #22 Kaylse Garrett had a spike coming out of a timeout, and the Owls went on a 12-2 run to take the second set 25-11. In the third and last set, the Owls came out hot and opened a 6-2 lead early.

Mykel Ivy had another good set with 4 kills, but the Lions held up tough. Touches on the ball just weren’t going in the Lions' favor. The Owls extended their lead to 20-9 and won the set 25-11. Following the match, we asked Liberty Christian head coach Mike Carey about his thoughts of the game. “We were too worried about mistakes, and we were not moving freely. We needed to continue to talk even when when we were down in the match. Body language also says a lot.” However,  Carey was also very pleased with some aspects of the game. When asked what the Lions did well in the contest, Carey responded, “In the third set, I was very pleased with our improvement when passing after receiving a ball. We also did better tracking a ball with our whole body instead of just using our arms.” The Lions' record fell to 3-3 overall 1-1 in the PAAC. The Owls' record improved to 2-0 overall 1-0 in the PAAC. The Lions play at home on Tuesday vs APA.
